Baja made 2 24 ft. models that year,
one was the bandit, the other one
was the 240 ( they used to call it the 226.)

I had a 91' bandit ( the smaller of the
2 24 footers) that ran low 70's with
a 502 mag, upgraded it to the equivelant
of a HP465, it would run mid 70's

I'm guessing your making around
450 hp. by the comparison.

Do you know your compression ratio and timing????
I think you may have a big problem.

Default Could be a little faster than stock...

I assume that you had the rectangle port heads and switched over to smaller oval port Edelbrock heads. Not much of an increase in power there (but some!). The Edelbrock intake manifold is not much better than the Chevy aluminum intake manifold (maybe two or three horsepower better). The increased compression was probably good for 10 or 15 horsepower. The camshaft is too big for a 454 but you might have picked up 10 or 15 horsepower over the stock camshaft at 5,800 rpm. No noticable horsepower increase will come from the MSD at 5,800 rpm (only a slight 3-5 horsepower increase from a CD will come at 5,500 rpm and higher). I would guess your engine is making about 400 horsepower at 5,800 rpm. Not bad, but a smaller camshaft would really wake it up if it weren't for that high compression ratio. The big camshaft is probably cutting down the cranking compression just low enough to keep it from detonating on pump gas. A smaller camshaft would make the engine detonate. Test the cranking compression, if it is over 190 you are in trouble with detonation. You should reset the total timing advance to 32 or 30 to see if you go any faster. Make sure you are running a cold plug. An AC R42TS should work ok.
Good Luck
Sincerely
Dennis Moore
