Default 454 Mag - remote oil filter - which one and other tune up Qs

I have a 95 34 PQ with 454 Mags.

The only oil filter I've found to fit the remote (the issue being the height of the filter) is a fram. Has any one found another alternative?

Also what brand of wires, cap and plugs would you suggest for a tune-up?

Thanks

Jeff

The Mercruiser oil filter fits the best (if you can stand the price). I have cut them apart many times to inspect them for debris and they are of the highest quality.

Take it from a Mercruiser Master Tech who has serviced a lot of engines. The Champion RV15YC4 works great and are available at any auto parts store. Gap them at .045 (that's what they are designed for).

If you have an EFI 454 then purchase either the tan Accell cap and rotor for the Delco distributor or the Mercruiser cap and rotor. They have brass terminals, the AC Delco replacement has aluminum terminals. If you have the carb. 454 then you need to purchase the Mercruiser cap and rotor from a dealer (the price is high but the quality is the best).

Mercruiser wires are also high quality, but if you go with aftermarket wires be sure that they have brass terminal ends to match the brass terminals in the distributor cap. Dissimilar metals will corrode in a marine environment and create resistance between the dist. terminals and the wire terminals.

Sincerely

I use the Mercruiser brand. It is the short one. Here is the part number 35-802885T, some might have a Q on the end instead of a T this is the same filter.

Thanks for the responses!!!

Dennis - the plug you spec'd is that good for the 454 Mag EFI (versus carb'd).

Thanks!

Dennis - one more question....just so I understand, what is the benefit of the plug you recommend over what is listed in the merc book for this motor?

Thanks again!

This is the spark plug listed in the Champion/Mercruiser book for your engine. It has an extended tip and is made for a .045 inch gap.

Dennis , the book I have shows AC mr43t or Champ rv8c......

If what you recommend is a better choice...I just want to understand the differences.

Thanks!

Jeff you must have an old spark plug catalog. The newer Champion catalogs that Mercruiser sends to all of their dealers lists the RV15YC4. It has a wider heat range than most spark plugs because it extends farther into the combustion chamber. It is probably Champions biggest selling spark plug because it fits so many applications.
