Default Paging: Dennis Moore or anyone else who has a good knowledge of Merc 300 Tempest SBC

Did they make this engine in a left hand configuration? or right hand only?

I am sure that it was only made in a right hand (standard rotation) version. It was the old L82 short block with standard heads and aluminum intake manifold.

All stern drive engines are standard rotation.

I had a 24' Cigarette with a MerCruser 400 Cyclone and B/W-TRS that came new from the factory with a counter-rotating big block. What fun when it came time to find the proper replacement starter. --- Jer

Standard rotation is lefthand, counterclockwise, when standing behind the boat, for stern drive and straight drive.

jpclear, your starter was counter rotating because it sits on the back of the motor facing the opposite direction. Merc never made a counter rotating stern drive engine.

Well, the cam had all the bumps in different places, the TRS drive was RH (stamped right on the end of the prop shaft) and it ran a LH 24 cleaver. As of last month the boat was still running (with that funny engine that they never made) in the Blind Bay/Hammond area of the 1000 islands. If you get up for the poker run this weekend you could check it out. I will admit that as a Merc. dealer since 1962 this was the ONLY one that I ever saw or heard of. It was also the only Cigarette I ever came across that had the helm on the port side. --- Jer

Bowtie; Further research indicates (as you said) that Merc. never built a production opposite rotation engine for stern drive application, only for straight inboards. However, this must have been some weird kind of Cigarette project boat cause it DID INDEED turn backwards. It did have a high mount starter but it mounted in front of the flywheel as the standard lower mount starters do. So, opposite rotation starter for opposite rotation engine. And of course all this could easily be done by setting the B/W pump up for that rotation. Why Cigarette did this, I guess we'll never know. The boat never did achieve the kind of performance we expected. --- Jer
