Default Carb Base Gaskets

Curious....When do you use a open base gasket and when do you use a 4-hole gasket? Also have always noticed that the gaskets I use (Mr.Gasket) have a number printed on one side and the outher side has a very slight film (I think) on it and the MR. Gasket logo all over it...It dosnt' make a difference "which side is up" does it? Thanks guys sorry about the simple questions.....

use the four hole gasket on a four hole intake.
open gasket on a open plenum intake.
don't know about the film, should still seal either way.
I use felpro gaskets and they are the same both sides.
