Default Hp 500

From my other thread I'm looking to update my 454 based blower motors to 502 based. I have a line on 3 sets of HP500 long and short blocks. Any one have the specs on whats in them and what makes them different than a 502 mag crate motor?

Can the pistons be machined to lower compression for a blower application?

Thanks.

There was a thread a few weeks ago about the components of the HP500. I am considering building a 500 clone and would like to see a complete list of parts too.

Where are you getting the long or short blocks from? Does andbody know of a quality, reasonably priced source?

i bought 2 450 hp crate motors 1.5 yrs ago and had em updated and marinezed, they have ran flawleslly. over the last winter i had teague merlin heads, teague cams, darty intakes, stud girdles crane gold roller rockers new liftrs and on and on, if i were to do it again would have been cheaper to buy motors allready built that way,
as i have 12k in crate motors
1500 in getting em set up for the boat some check valve and all the boat stuff flywheel intead of flex plate etc etc.
10k merlin ported heads with inconel etc cams stud girdles arp bolts rockers lifters dart intakes and on and on ,
so basically i have over 23k+++ in these motors which is still ok for as per teague are 550 hp+ motors,
anyway i just see that u can buy done stuff and let the seller take the loss,,
i am in a dilema as i want 650Hp plus now, and i cant see throwing more dough into these,,
blowers seemed the best way to go but these are dialed in and comp should be lower and should have diff cam for that,, this is what i am told,,
my o2

The 500 HP Carb was a 502 crate/marine engine. Mercruiser removed the heads and installed bigger valve springs, bigger camshaft, roller rocker arms and the Dart single plane intake manifold. They never did any work to the rotating assembly.

I am not sure about the 500 EFI, but I can't believe that the Mercruiser High Performance Department rebuilds each 500 EFI before selling it. The internals are all stock except for camshaft, valve springs and rocker arms. When they take delivery of the 502 partial marine engine from GM it is an assembly, and I don't think that they remove the crank, rods, pistons and oil pump to inspect them and then reassemble them.

I know that the 540 Bulldog is completely custom built and all of the supercharged engines have blower pistons, so they must be custom built.
