Convert XR dual pickup to just lower…..
When I lower my drive to the neutral (horizontal) position my upper pickups are actually at or just above the V of the boat. My concern is that when running hard I’m actually ramming water into the lower and a good percentage is blowing right out the upper holes costing me some water supply to my blown motor.
Has anyone filled the top holes, blended them smooth and slightly enlarged the lower holes on this drive?
I will be adding a sea strainer also.

Yes, I had to do this when I upgraded to an XR when I added the Whipple system. I used to get 30 psi at wot with the old LWP on the bravo. The XR with "mid" pickups only gave me 10 psi. I talked to Dustin who recommended plugging the strut pickups with stainless pipe plugs (1/16 NPT tap) and elongating the lowers with a file. There's actually a Merc racing bulletin outlining this procedure. I did not bother smoothing over the pipe plugs-they're flush with the surface and I doubt you'd notice any top end difference. Water pressure now at 20+ psi. PM me and I'll forward the bulletin from Merc.
