View Full Version : Best carb Holley or Quadrajet??? Brian Crane 11-16-2003, 04:51 AM What would be the best carb & size to use. At wide open with high hp for extended periods, it's easy to suck it dry. Also, it's spreadbore design makes it more difficult to get even plug readings. Stick with the Holley, you are prob close to 500hp already....... For drag racing tho, they are the chit.! :p just my cent worth.! SledgeHammer 11-16-2003, 12:37 PM I have a 468 with a Holley 750. It has awesome throttle response. I initially thought the carb was a little small, but when I raised this question, someone did the math and a 750 is plenty. I was told I would loose throttle response and would likely not gain anything on top. Bigger is not always better. 220BR 11-16-2003, 04:52 PM I love the Q-jet too, but for marine applications I feel 425-450 HP is about the best it can do. Cord 11-16-2003, 05:09 PM The quad is an excellent carb for the street. It's not the best carb for a marine app that's trying to build hp. I believe all the holly cfm charts are weighted for the street. I believe that a marine app doesn't need the reduced cfm of a street carb. Ie-if you were 100 cfm over the charts recommendation, the carb will still be ok. dyno 11-16-2003, 07:33 PM your kidding right?ever see a race motor with a Qjet? The Qjets are fine on stock stuff but the desciption you gave aint stock....800-850 holley my .02 Airpacker 11-17-2003, 01:39 PM An 800 holley would be your best bet at 468 inches unless you are gonna turn em up real high when an 850 would probably be better. blue thunder 11-17-2003, 06:13 PM I could be pursuaded to trade my two 750cfm quadrajets for those pesky old 850s you have. I'm feeling generous ;) Dave RumRunner 11-18-2003, 12:08 PM Over carbureting on a marine application can be worse than an automotive since your normally running at a much higher load situation, for longer durations in a boat than in a car. Based on the fuel being pulled from a carburetor you are always safer going smaller if the application is on the boarder line. mr_velocity 11-18-2003, 01:35 PM I'd go with Holley 830s TPCRacing 11-20-2003, 03:36 AM Originally posted by Brian Crane What would be the best carb & size to use. I have a 89-28" Pantera with twin 468 Lunati cams,Team G intakes Holley 850 & SSM exhaust For a heavy boat BBC application the HP950 or even hybrid version 950 would be the best carburetor and here is why... The 950 carburetor uses a 750 mainbody (1 3/8" venturi) and 850 throttlebody (1 3/4" throttlebore). This gives the Marine BBC a very strong bottom-end signal for torque and a more top-end horsepower thanks to the larger throttlebody. I build these types of carbs all day long for Marine set-ups and hands down the 950 is the hot-ticket, just below a HP1000 carburetor. Stay away from those 830s for this type of application. I won't go into much detail but to say they were originaly designed for NASCAR trucks not for Marine torque monsters. Granted they'll function in this enviroment but it's not money well spent. The bang for the buck factor is out of tolerance. ~Ty |
