Thumbs up 454-330hp completed

Well , it is finally done. For those of you who had ideas and support for my project, I thank you much. Here are my ingredients for horsepower.Stock crank, polished, Eagle 4340 I beam 7/16 forged con rods, Clevite77 H series rod ,main bearings, Speed-Pro2465 forged pistons, 9.6-1comp. with 118s, Speed-Pro plasma-moly rings, ARP main studs( engine is 4 bolt ), .030 overbore, 781 large oval port heads 2.19-1.88 Manley stainless valves, ported, bowl blended, Lunati double roller chain and gears with torrington bearing, Comp Cam Xtreme energy 11-246-3 ( 230-236 [email protected] .552-.555 lift@valve 110 lobe centerline ) 3/8 push rods, Harland Sharp roller rockers, Lunati Hi-Perf valve spings, Edelbrock performer rpm air-gap intake, Holley 800 double pumper, K+N stub stack, flame arrestor, all ARP fasteners, entire rotating assembly balanced, Fel-Pro Hi-Perf. gasket kit (exept head gaskets, went with Mercruiers .032 thickness gaskets for better quench) , Speed-Pro hi volume oil pump. I will purchase Revolution Marine exhaust in the spring when I recover from financial ruin. At this time it is 20 deg. outside, and could no longer wonder how she would run. Last week I pulled old 454 out of my 73 one-ton pickup and installed new engine. Swapped a few external parts for auto compatibility. Primed her up ( oil and fuel ) and she fired right off. Broke in engine for 1/2 hour and took it for a ride. WOW! I have never felt power like that in an auto, let alone a truck. I dont know what the horsepower or torque is but the 454 that came out of the truck is supposed to be 345hp. There is no comparison, new engine makes old feel like 4 cylinder. Hope it performes half that well in the boat this spring! Any tips or ideas to further improve this monster are welcomed . Thanks again. JW 454.

I'd guess you're looking at 450+ horsepower. I think you'll be really happy with the performance in the boat. Congratulations!

JW

You put yer motor in the 1-ton... that's too funny. Talk about a go-fast guy with an itch!

Congrats on finishing your project. Have fun with it this summer.

Seriously, Im not familiar with the exhaust you are going to run but i would be very concerned with reversion with the cam you are using. The later the water enters the exhaust stream, the better, and keeping the idle rpm up will help too. Good Luck, sounds like a runner. Just make sure your not sucking water into the heads at idle.

Thanks for the congrats. Just hit 300 miles and feels even stronger than before. Not so shure how GM TH-400 tranny likes it! Like you , Formula I am a little concerned about reversion. When I pull the motor from the truck I am going to switch to Comp Cams XM-270-H ( 11-236-4 ) , almost same specs as current one but wider lsa of 112. Have any of you guys tried or heard how this cam works ? The sales guy from Comp. wanted to sell me the next size bigger cam XM-280 OR 288 , not shure. Do not think it would have given me much bottom end. He did not feel that bottom end was of any importance for a marine engine. I say he never tried to yank 3 water skiers out of the water before. My biggest complaint with the boat was getting out of the hole and on plane faster as well as a strong mid range to accelerate through a hard turn. I know the correct prop has everything to do with it but I have tried several different pitch ( 21-24 p ) 4 blade props and in the end I knew more bottem and mid range had to be the answer. XM-270 not totaly a bottom end cam, but I feel 9.6-1 comp. ratio should offset the loss. Opinions please. Thanks. JW 454.
