Default starter problems

Hi guys, i had a problem with my starter so i took it out and bought a new one, its the high torque, like 8 lbs i think, it goes on a 502, the old one didnt have shims, so i put this on with out them and it makes all kinds of noise, like its not hitting the flywheel property, i counted the teeth on the started and both are 11 and they both go in the same direction, maybe i need shims, but why? the old exact started didnt have any. Any suggestion in what is going on? thanks

BTW i have my arms worse than a crack addict
took the stupid thing in and out like 8 times, im hurting.

what was wrong with the old starter? is the new one the correct one? does the part number cross? did you need diferent length bolts to make this starte work?

i was at the lake friday testing and i think something got caught on my pickup i noticed no water coming out of my pipes as well as 220 on the temp so i shut it down, the boat would turn but not start, so im worried kept trying, starte once but shut off again, then the started just started free spinning, like it was spining but not coming out, tried to hit it but nothing just kept spining , i took the started out and took it to napa, it was $200 and looked identical. There was number on the started that i had. but same teeth on both and same rotation. im confused, i used the same bolts from before, which 1 is longer than the other, but logically that woulnt matter if they go up all the way. right? Dunno what to do.

I replaced a starter and had the same thing happen. If it sounds like a slight grinding than you need to shim it. The castings are probably slightly different.

In another post you said that your oil didn't have water in it, right? If you had enough water to hydrolock it would end up in your oil pan.
