Default 454 cam suggestions?

I have 454/330 engine project, that`s now in need for
some cam advice. Block is 4-bolt w/new eagle cast crank,
sir rods, kb-pistons 9.1:1, w/119cc heads. Heads are
269cc oval port Merlin`s w/2.30"/1.88" valves, pocket ported & gasket matched, block`s notched. Final compression ratio should be apprx. 8.8:1-9.2:1 after
decking the block. Intake is RPM Q-jet w/Rochester carb Exhaust is either EMI or Stainless Marine. DD2000 runs w/ cs1015R 214/.502 int. 224/.529 ex. have shown best
overall Tq/Hp numbers vs cs1039R or crane`s 420Hp cam. Boat is 24ft, and ran 54mph@4700rpm w/23"prop
with stock 330. I´m using long slot stamped rockers,
at least first. Should I ignore DD2000, and step to more
cam? I´m looking for reliable, long service interval engine.

Thank you, in advance....

What cam?

I agree with sutphen30. A little more duration would be good. What are you using on dd2000 for exhaust selection and what are you getting for peak tq and hp numbers and at what rpm.

I´m using small tube headers w/mufflers and flow numbers from Hi-Perf Chevy Mag article. Numbers are;

peak tq 497lbs@3500rpm, and over 450lbs from 2000 to
4500rpm.

peak hp 396@4500rpm, and 394@5000 so the peak hp looks too small, but tq seems to be really good. Anyway
compared to stock 330 engines number which were by DD2000 287hp@4000rpm and tq 447lbs@2500rpm,
there is over 150hp more @5000rpm. So am I too
conservative with the cam, should I just go with cs1039R,
or some other similar?

Thanks again in advance,

P

Yup, they're SpeedPro. I like to use the 1139 and 1140 cams.

Here is the cam I run in very similar engines to yours. comp cam 11-239-3 270h-11

544/564
226/234 @.050
timing seat to seat
ivo 28
ivc 62
evo 74
evc 24

Seems to work pretty well and I get better numbers than yours on dd2000. Only major difference is I run rect port heads.

When I did my 330 in a similar fashion with ported 049 heads I ran an Erson 228/235 @ .050" on 112 + 4 with .540" lift and it worked great!!!

Im using the 224, 232 , .527, .553 at 114 sep. timed at 109 icl because of silent choice reversion worries. Otherwise Id have gone with 112 or 110 and more lift.

Formula31, what is your idle speed, and vacuum reading
at idle? How much rpm@wot?

Use small tubes with NO mufflers on DD.
Also spec the cams with the "advertised duration" figures instead of the .050" figures.

You should see appx 305hp on your stock (330) combo.

You're running large valves for those smallish ports (no I'm not being critical of your head selection) so you won't be needing MEGA lift. Still, I'd steer towards a cam with lift figures between .530" and .550".

This doesn't appear to be a "lightweight" boat, but also obviously isn't a stone either. I would go with significantly more cam than your current "DD favorite".

I agree on the 218/228 @ .050" target.

Idle at 700, vacuum at idle around 15 if I remember right or was it 12, somewhere in there. Im right around 5200 and up to 5400 in cold air and waves. 5000 on hot day with flat water. Contrary to majority opinion, I also use edelbrock torker 2 intakes (single plane) due to deck height problems and holley 780 vacuum secondarys, heavily modified. 049 heads on one engine and 781's on the other, both with 1.88, 2.19 valves and bowl and mild port work, chambers unshrouded and cylinder notched. Your head should be better. I think I could use more cam but I would have to increase compression, go roller, and get rid of silent choice. So Im happy with my choices and have been for 14 years running this same setup on a variety of boats(aside from some recent blowups). My old formula had different, serious engines putting out the max for NA.
