Default 2 speed transmissions??

Searched but could not find a previous discussion on this subject.

Does anyone have alot of experience with those B&M 2-speed transmissions? (72C replacement style) They get used alot in non-offshore boat applications but I had heard rumors that they did not hold up well in Offshore environment (too much loading and unloading from the props coming out of the water). I have 900hp and would love to use them simply for idling around the docks and getting into gear easier. I wouldn't even use them to get on plane since I already have alot of prop slip.

Did they hold up for anyone? Did anyone break a bunch of them? I noticed that they don't seem to make them anymore.

Thanks

That's your best reason to call Huber or Bam.

jody, i have two speed transmissions and i would never have a boat without them. you can change gears with one finger and motors idle great around docks and get on plane easier.

BYC, are they the B&M versions? What brand are you using? What kind of HP do yours hold up to?

Jody, I HEAR the biggest cause of problems with them is lack of precision. You need to have everything adjusted dead on for these to work for the long haul.

OK, now I am even more confused. When I think Powerglides I think 1950's automotive 2-speed automatic trannys. I would think that if you wanted to go that way, a person would at least start with a turbo400 transmission like we did in waterski racing instead of an old Powerglide. I would like to hear more about the Powerglide application. Any and all details are appreciated.

Still trying to figure out if I should buy some available used B&M 2 speeds to replace my Huber Cryptonite trans. Anyone have experience with the B&M's? Where are all the trans guys when you need em?

Come on OSO.

Powerglides are the trans of choice in high HP drag applications. ALL of the parts have been updated to extremely beefy hardware.

Yes, they began as lowly 2 speed mushboxes behind 283's, but they are quite different today.

TH400's are heavy and unnecessary.

Interesting. Does anyone modify the Powerglide to drop into a Velvet drive without changing anything? That would make this a done deal.

That's what makes the B&M 2-speeds so interesting. They were engineered to drop right into a Velvet Drive (72C) slot. I think they just shortened a TH400 and beefed it up inside.

my trans. a power glide does not have any loss when in high gear because it is 1 to 1 and a th400 would still be going through gears.
