Replumbing Raw Water System--Need Advice
I've got a 1987 Formula SR357. While I've got the engines out I'm re-rigging the entire engine compartment. One major item on hte list is to re-plumb the raw water system.
I'm currently using the older Mercruiser transom pickups.
One option is to go to thru-hull scoop pickups--
Other option is replacement transom pickup--
Can anyone tell me how to best plug transom holes ig I go thru-hull?
Would also appreciate feedback on thru-hull to use
Finally--what is best transom pickup if there is one ?
Thanks for help

Re: Replumbing Raw Water System--Need Advice
I would keep your transom pickups.
I do have a perko 1 1/4 strainer scoop thru fitting and it works great. 1 1/4 hose direct to the raw water pump. I didn't want to drill my transom because of the wood in it. I wanted a thru fitting where I could get to a valve to turn it off. I cannot get to the transom in my engine box. My hull is glass and I opted to seal the thru fitting with 5200 rather than mess with the wood in the transom. Mine fitting is about three feet from the transom and about a foot up from the keel. Lots of water. Make sure it doesn't hit a trailer bunk.
One of the things that works well is that my engine mounted bravo pump never runs dry. The pump doesn't have to suck the water into it. the pump is below the water line.
I run full closed cooling to get around the water pressure problem. The closed cooling system will handle 60 psi.
My setup works well. At speed I think I could bypass the raw water pump and just use the ram water pressure. The ram pressure will max out my 30 psi guage so I don't know how much pressure I get.
I would keep what you have if it works.
