Default 454 upgrade, what are your thoughts.

I have a boat that I am looking to upgrade. This is a daily driver for some of the lakes north of Toronto. I am an outboard guy, but am trying to learn these big blocks.

I have been working out all the components in my Jegs catalog to see what might work. I have found a lot of them cheeper elsewhere, but this is a place to start.

Take the existing 454 330hp, with Imco Powerflow exhaust and crossover water system and doing the following.
-Original block
-Eagle 496 rotating assembly
-Edelbrock Performer RPM Rectangle port Marine heads
-Crane 731 Hydraulic Roller cam
-Edelbrock Victor Jr. rectangle port intake.

As best as I can figure out this will give a 9:1 compression ratio. I have a good machine shop and a competant assembly guy.

If someone is willing, I would like to show my parts list and get your opinion.

Also what kind of power should this make, and at what rpm.

Thanks

RT

A full parts list to follow..... please add to it.

You don't have a bad selection of parts. Watch those Eagle parts for tolerances. I'd change the Victor Jr intake to a Performer RPM intake. Keep the water pump. The crossover will be a PIA. I didn't know that Edelbrock had come out with some marine ones, so I can't comment on them. Edelbrock generally doesn't screw up, so you should be safe with them.

I'd guess at 500+ hp @ 55000rpm.

Cord,

Thanks for the quick response. What is wrong with the crossover system?

I am trying to reduce as much weight as possible.

Cord, the edelbrock heads are hard anodized and come with SS intake valves and inconel exhaust valves.

I've used crossovers for years without a problem. In some cases they can cause high block water pressure which causes leaks at the intake/head and milkshake oil. I've always used a lot of sealant around that passage. Make sure you get the crossover with a bypass and drill 3 1/8 holes in the thermostat. It's good for about 50 lbs. weight reduction.

I believe the Edelbrock heads alrady have rocker studs installed. What Carb are you going to run? Sounds like you have picked some good parts.

I am not sure on the studs or the carb, but I was thinking an 850 annular discharge venom.

I need HELP!. So far all the parts are $5500 ish, I am hoping for 500+ hp and be reliable and run on regular fuel.

Stay away from Eagle cranks, they all come defective and usually they need to be staighten and size under. Get a Crower or a Lunati money well spent the first time.
The mains on the Eagles are always left to big, remember you want reliabilty. On the carb get a 750 hp and you will not go wrong with a Dart intake. Good luck to you

I think an 850 would be over kill for your engine. Look at a used 830 off a HP500 carb. That alone will save you several hundred.

As Patri mentioned, you can run into water pressure problems without the pump. He didn't mention that you can also have temp problems. Usually the engine runs too cold. I have the crossover and had to add a pressure dump valve to control the pressure. Even with a bypass and drilled thermostat, it's rare that I'll see more than 120 degrees of block temp.

Speaking of temps, you do have a good set of coolers, right? If not, you should add one to your list.

Is the 5k too much? There is another option for much less money. Take your 454 and just do a basic rebuild. Balance the assembly. Put ARP bolts in your magnafluxed rods. Forged pistons. Hang some inconel exhaust valves in your stock heads. Some aluminum exhaust manifolds. Now bolt on a 250 blower with a 1050 carb. You'll be just over 525hp with that setup. A bit more if you use the 731 cam.
