Default Do I need a Sea Strainer?

Newbie question here.........I have a 1997 Scarab 23. 454/bravo 1. I run mainly in the ocean. Do I need a sea strainer or can i even use one? and if so what is a good one to use and any tips on installation?

Thank You for any help

Default Re: Do I need a Sea Strainer?

I just added them to my 1990 Cigarette. I only did it becuse I had the engines out and I found a good deal on a used pair. I'm not using seawater pickups - just the water form the drives.

On first impression I was amazed at all of the chit it traps. I don't run in the ocean that much, but they have still caught a lot of debris. I installed them with y-valves on the "in" side, with hoses running down into the bilge. This can act as an emergency bilge pump in case I need it.

All I can say is they are good insurance, and there's not much that can break on them. But a lot of people get by without them, as my boat did for 14 years..
