Electronic Ignition Conversion
My OMC Cobra (1988), is still points. I want to convert to electronic ignition, and was going back and forth between Pertronix, or the Delco EST system.
Anyone use these before? How do you like them? Forget MSD, I need something reliable! Pertronix, and Delco are both compatible with the OMC ESA. Opinions?
Thanks

Re: Electronic Ignition Conversion
I had an OMC and put pertronix in it - cleaned up idle quite a bit. Be careful that the green tape around the insert is not disturbed - if so, all the magnets will come flying out and the engine will die. This happened to me and pertronix sent out a new insert - no problems after that. New boat with MSD. Initial unit bad but now up and running - hotter multiple spark has leaned me out a bit. If I did it over, I would use one of the other systems reccomended on this site - do some searching
Good luck

Re: Electronic Ignition Conversion
A little known fact to a lot of boaters is that NAPA has a marine catalog about 1500 pages thick.
They have excellent electronic conversion kits for just about every marine points distributor ever made, at a price that you can live with. Last one I did was around $100.
