Default 502 Efi Flame Arrestor

I have been considering putting an aftermarket flame arrestor on my 1999 502 mag for some cheap extra HP. (Also open to other ideas) Doing research, I have found that K&N is popular. I also notice that although they all use the same filter, they use different mounting hardware.
My questions are:
1. Is there a better flame arrestor and filter to get than K&N?

2. Is there a certain mounting hardware that is better than others?

I will assume that everyone uses K&N and there isn't a much better option.
Does the factor flame arrestor ever need cleaning?

I was told that if your stock arrestor is the wire mesh design that flows around and not through the end that and aftermarket will not flow better. But, if you have the end flow design then there is definitely a restriction there.

Just what I was told.

Thanks,
I would rather not waste any money.
Is there a way to clean the existing one? Suggestions?

If it's the black plastic one, just unscrew it off the intake (it's a star headed screw) take some carb cleaner and blow the crap out,put it back on and call it good.

Seems to me that Lingenfelter just used the stock flame arrestor on the 575hp 502mpi to 540mpi conversions that came out a few years back. It must be the last bottleneck in that induction system. They do look kind of cool though.
