With GenV block which Crane #741 camshaft should be installed?
The GenV block (HP500) that I have has a thrust plate to retain the cam.
The 168741 cam is for GenVI but can it be installed in GenV ?
Is the 139741 only to be used with Torrington thrust and cam button?
I want to retain the thrust plate so is the 168741 the correct choice?

You need to use the 139741 with the thrust bearing and cam button. I think the thrust plate you are refering to is really the locking plate for the cam bolts. It doesn't control thrust.

The thrust plate you are referring to was used by GM in Gen5 & Gen 6 engines. Merc as far as I've seen, did not use them to Gen 6. The plate can be used as long as the two screw holes are above & below the cam, but not a Gen 4. I say that, but have not seen a Gen 5 in a few years.

Crane identifies the cam's bolt patten on the nose of the cam by the second digit. 139741 is old style, 169741 would be new Gen 6 style. By simply changing that number, Crane will do the same grind with a different nose.

You can use the plate over and the timing set. Install a new chain. Scroggin Dickey now offers a roller chain for the Gen 6 setup for about $95.00. I prefer the plate over the thrust bearing because it is simple to install. If you go with the old style cam you must use a cam button. Watch the timing cover while running to verify it is not flexing out allowing cam walk.

This is a picture of the camshaft head that was pulled out of my GenV engine.
Also a picture of the thrust plate that was bolted to the block to retain the cam.
I want to be able to use this setup and not have to go to the Bearing and cam
button that I used previously on my MIV engines.
I'm still confused as to which camshaft to use for my application.

Dennis,
That cam is the stepped nose Gen VI. It must be the one marked 169621. The other cam you pictured in the indentify thread is the earlier design.

I just finished talking to Crane and they also believe that it's a GenVI camshaft
that I need to install.
Actually the cam pictured is a Cam Motion which is approximate to a Crane 731.
I also looked at non HP500 parts diagrams of gen V and a thrust plate is not present.
What I'm saying is that some models you can use the thrust bearing/button setup
with double row chain.
HP500 has a thrust plate/single row chain.

What I found with a pair of later model Gen"V" HP500s, was a thrust retainer plate similar to the GenVI set up, "but" the actual plate and the nose of the cam were not the same as a Gen VI!
I would go with the GenVI set up. You can get the proper cam retainer from GM High Performance (www.paceparts.com), (you will need to call to ask for it) and run a timing set specific for a Gen VI.
This is a much better set up than a "thrust Bearing"!!

I Went With A Genvi Cam And Retaining Plate Just Like That On A Mkiv Block. Had To Use A Single Roller Chain #220 9-3149 From Jegs 119.00
