Closed cooling, and reverse rotation questions
Guys,
I am helping my new boss do a little work on his cruiser, 1986 Cruisers Inc., twin 350 closed cooling.
We have establisehed that the engines rotate opposite due to different firing order, but which one is standard?? Starboard I believe???
OK, now, since one is reverse........
are the circulating pumps the same, or different for each motor????
and, since it is closed cooling, and the circulating pump is only pushing antifreeze, is it OK to use autotive style pumps??? He doesnt want to spend the $$$ on marine ones, I need to give him a good reason not to use automotive, if there is one???
Thanks,
Rick

Re: Closed cooling, and reverse rotation questions
Rick,
I have used the automotive ones on 350's and only needed to paint them as they come unpainted and will rust quickly. Not sure if the internal quality is the same or not. About the "rotation" issue, I think they are the same, but never really questioned it.
BAM's site had the following, maybe it can help:
E.S.

If all else fails, I'll give marc a call during the week, gonna at least need hoses, and sewater pump rebuild kits anyhow. Let me know when your workin' on the boat again, I wanna see it.

Re: Closed cooling, and reverse rotation questions
With reverse (oposite) engine rotation the difference at the seawater pump is reversing of the input/output hoses since the pumps turns "oposite" direction. Regards circulating water pump the big difference I've been told is some stanless compnents in marine version vs not in automotive. I think I saw some other differences on thread here though.
FWIW---I'd be inclined to use marine version even thought the cost is somewaht higher--

The circulating pump is a special reverse rotation pump. You can use automotive pumps no problem. There are also automotive normal and reverse rotation pumps avaliable. With the auto reverse pump, it's used for serpantine belt drive applications.
