Default Merc Blues & Their Valve Springs

An earlier 500/525 post had a couple of great replies, thanks cstraub and rmbuilder, but I am going to try and reword to get what I am after.

The HP500 has had many posts regarding valve spring replacement at the 200hr mark. I have HP500 efi's in our 05/Lightning with 53 hrs.

Questions:
1. Is this an early HP500 problem that has gone away?
2. Do all these Merc Blues need spring maintenance and it's just the 500's that get picked on in these posts?
3. If no to 3 what the heck is different in the 525's and others?

I've got no problem going in and doing, I am just very confused why all I hear about are 500's and not the others!

Summer heat,

It is a problem on all 500efi's Its not that the motor will stop working at 250 hours, it is just great insurace to replace the springs then. Perfect example is I have a 2001 500efi and replaced the springs at 275 and already had a broken inner spring. Motor ran the exact same never noticed anything. But am really glad I caught it before I broke the outer spring

As for 525's I have no idea but I imagine its the same. Its not that the springs are faulty, all springs should be checked/maintained on any 500 plus HP motor, merc or anyone elses.

Summer,
It is a common problem in all marine Hyd roller applications. The HP 500 Blues, do to the intend use in the boats that they are put in and the higher max rpm range they see, the spring life is reduced quicker. They get a bad rap but it is not them specifically. If you turn those things to a max of 4400 rpm they would probably run for 600 hours.
