Thumbs down MSD Distributors

I got a use one with my box of parts and the pick up is so corroded that it cannot be used! It looks fuzzy and orange. where is the best places to get a pickup? I have never run a MSD before and the module looks small, compared to a GM hei. I have been reading on the dui dist and those seem decent but i am at the point, just like many here that this is really starting to hemorrhage money..... i have used hopped up GM stuff in the past and i like the dependability of it all. ANy Who... dose MSD offer a rebuild progra m?

I recently asked tech support at MSD if there was a way to control or minimize corrosion under the distributor cap on a marine application. The said that the corrosion was due to the highly ionized air in the cap attracting moisture. Their advise was to remove the cap and dry it out between each use.

CRC makes a corrosion spray called SP400 we spray all the caps and everything in the distributor to keep it from corroding.

Tyler recommended this for one of the engines he built for me and it completely eliminated any corrosion. I also sprayed it inside the new distributor cap I installed each year as part of my annual tuneup.

I have used the MSD Distributor rebuild service.
Two years ago it was $75.00 plus shipping.
Looked like a brand new distributor when I received it.
I have to admit, there is a slight amount of corrosion again.

Toss the MSD crap. The stock Merc. distributor is an excellent piece when used in cojunction with a Crane HI-6M. Built in selectable curves, rev limiter, and even variable retard as well as diagnostics. Color coded harness matches merc. harness. You will have to re-index the merc. rotor which is a little tricky.

I second the DUI recommendation. Simple, reliable, and rock solid timing.
