I would never go boating without them ater having them for about four years.
There are many advantages including being able to instantly see if you have water flow. Also if your bilge is filling up with water you can pull the top off the strainer and start the engine and it will pump the water out FAST.
You always want to install a cut off valve inline before the strainer also which is another plus. Just alwasy make sure it is open before cranking the engine.
I recommend installing a water pressure gauge as well. You must have good water flow just like oil flow to keep your engine alive and the pressure gauge along with the strainer take all the guess work out and allow you to know there is a problem long before the temp gauge goes up.
