Own A Piece Of History

Im surprised no one has commented on this. Since it was pointed out to me, I keep seeing the ad for this boat.

I have a funny story about this boat while doing a photo shoot one day.

Funny, I heard Sea Ray had Baja send them that boat when Baja was closing down. Guess after it was all done, the smartest guy in the world at Sea Ray, Rick Stone did not want it around after all. It was good enough to auction off with the trucking equipment they don't want.

I guess that is from the old Checkmate V-161 or V-141 mold that Bill Combs let them use?The original name was not Baja, but Cobra, until Ford claimed trademark infringement? Boy,it's been a long time, are my facts correct? My memory is getting weak.

Greg, how did it come to be that the Baja factory re-owned this boat? Was it Fred M.'s boat?

I heard the story before, but I'll have to talk to Dave & Lane. I remember Lane talking about redoing that boat at some point, and where it came from. It was rack stored when I hired in, and stayed there till they got it out for the 35th Anniversary pictures. They took a picture out in front of the factory with all the workers that had at least 20 yrs in. Then we took it out to the reservoir for a photo in the water with the red 35 Outlaw with 35th anniversary decals. After that it was displayed in the front office till Sea Ray got their filthy paws on it. The rumor Ive always heard is its not really the first one, but one of the first few.

Here's the fun story from the reservoir.

I had the red 35 Outlaw, and my buddy Paul had the Cobra. We got out there earlier than the others so we dropped both boats in the water to play till they got there. The 35 felt like a 51 Outerlimits next to the Cobra! Anyway, we're playing a little cat and mouse around the reservoir, with me chasing him down doing laps. Eventually, he runs out of gas and its windier than hell! By now the photographer and Dean R. show up, and the Cobra has already blown to shore (on the rocks!). This is all taking place up in the corner near the ramp. Anyway, I went in nose first, ran down the deck and tossed him a line from my front cleat and jumped back behind the wheel before I blew in. I pulled him out toward the middle and Dean decided we were still going to make this happen. The little Cobra was drifting in again fast, and I had Dean on the phone having me get into position. As we drifted past the ramp area, he had us get down on the floor out of the picture. I had Dean giving me orders to bump forward or reverse while hiding down on the floor. Somehow, with the help of the wind, the boats lined up perfectly and you couldnt have asked for a better picture! And surprisingly, as low as the Cobra sat, you couldnt see Paul hiding in there!
