Winterizing 6.2 liter
i was trying to walk my brother (in another state) thru winterizing his 2003 baja 232, however, after talking thru some things i quickly realized my 97 502 doesnt have many similarities to his engine...anyone wanna give me a quick lesson with this motor and getting it winterized properly.

WOW - so nobody has winterized a 6.2 liter huh? let me try to address this more specifically then, a local boat mech there said all he needed to do on that motor was to pour a gallon of antifreeze in the main engine coolant line from the top and it would get everywhere it needed to. (after pulling the petcocks draining the water from the engine) no running the motor pulling it thru the ear muffs till it comes out the exhaust like ive always done to mine. this didnt sound right to me but im no mechanic by any means - anyone???

If its possible on that engine, I would run anti freeze through the engine with the muffs and the engine running. I would want to get the antifreeze through all hoses, exhaust, coolers(if any), and outdrive. ...Just my 2 cents.

Thats how I do it. Drain all water then run through drive with 3 gallons of anti-freeze.

he said when he hooks the muffs to the outdrive it just pours the antifreeze back out thru the lower unit without circulating it thru the motor...he doesnt have thru hull exhaust so i presume its coming out thru the prop or wherever his exhausts...its pulling it fine, so its not an impellar thats gone bad either. its hard knowing exactly whats going on without seeing it or being there, thats why i posted. once he saw that that is when he called the mech and they said just to pull the main cooling line and pour directly into it...said thats all you have to do on that engine.

Take the blue plugs out of the exhaust and block.
That will drain the water out.
I have a sump pump and a 5 gallon bucket setup
that I use.
Some people use just a bucket and muffs though.
Dump a few gallons of anti-freeze in the bucket,
start the engine/turn on the pump, run it til the anti-freeze
is just about gone.
This will displace the rest of the water in the sea pump
and coolers, and dumps it out into the bilge.

I did a 6.2 the other day and it had a single point drain. If it has a round container on the bottom right of the motor it will drain the entire system. If you have blue plugs on the side of the block you don't have this system. It's best to get the motor warm by running the boat, plug the plugs and then run antifreeze into the motor using the muffs.

One the single point you need to pull the blue plug that is by the thermostat housing too. It acts as a vent for the system. Good chance it will break off when you try to remove it, have some new plugs on hand.
