mph for thisBaja outlaw 29

Mercury Marine has a "plus or minus" up to 10% on there HP ratings. During testing at Baja we seen some difference between the carbed 454 Mag, and the 502 Mag 390 hp. But I remember fudging engineering speed charts between the 454 Mag MPI 385 HP, and the 502 Mag MPI 415 HP because the testing was showing such close results. We had to show some kind of increase because we had to charge more money for the 502 option. I saw many test sheets that had higher speeds for the 454 MPI engine. Our Merc rep even confirmed that many 454 MPI'S made more than the rated HP, and the 502's were hard pressed to get their rating. I am sure some will argue this opinion, but I just thought it might be interesting?

I attributed it to the -1" IMCO drives I had on the 29 vs. the other 2 that had stock Bravos.

this is kind of off topic but how much slower is a 25 foot outlaw with a 454 vs a 496. I been reading about it and people say do not get a 454 in a 25 foot baja but the 454's price vs a 496 is so much cheaper

I have 7.4mpi 310s in my '99 OL. Same in my '99 302 I sold a few years back. Saw 63MPH in the 302, 65mph in the OL. The 310s have been wonderful engines for me. Never had an issue with them. People think they're weak. I've got no problem saving $10K on a boat and slowing down 2 or 3 MPH. Makes no difference when I'm anchored drinking beer!

Well the 6.2L is a small block and the 7.4L is a Big Block, but I can say that 6.2L is a stought engine if properly taken care of. The 7.4L was a great power plant as well unless you wanted to upgrade HP then you had to go through the complete motor...It's sorta like the 496Mag/HO great power plant if left stock as soon as you start messing with it you might as well get out your wallet or pull it and buy a 454Mag or 502Mag so you can affordably upgrade the engine.

wakeboarder.. 454 mag vs 496 is no difference.. other than the fact that it has close cooling and is new. my 454 mag runs great.. best of 65 with and 62-63 loaded all day.. but we cruise at 50mph!
496 mag will run about the same.. HO will get you 65 all day and if your lucky can spin a 24B1 to close to 70mph like a friend down in houma, la! freak motor!

yea im only willing to spend 20-30k....preferably 20-25k and im looking to get atleast a 1999 and newer. Looks like I might have to go with the 454 if I want something a bit newer.
You guys are all bashing the 454 but is 10k worth the extra 3 mph or is everything increased such as HP and stuff. As long as the boat can get on plane and run atleast 50 I think im happy. Speed = More Gas =/
