Raylar 103 kit for my 496HO Few ?s
Someone answer any of these questions..
Was thinking about doing the Raylar 103 kit after this season on my 496 HO and had a few questions for anyone who has installed:
-8-10mph gain typical?
-Cruising speed any different(for example now I cruise at about 45mph in the 3500 range-will I be at a lower rpm at the same speed with the extra power?
-Can I still run my stock exhaust setup or do I have to run headers?
-I have done heads and cams in Big Block Chevys in my cars before-so I think I could pull it off?
Thanks

I actually found this info from Ray in an older post which answers some of my questions:
----
Your friend is lucky to have someone like yourself to help him along!
We've got a quite a few customers who have put our 103 kit on 496's in Baja 25's. I can say with cetainty he can have 525HP without exhaust and ECM upgrades on his stock 496HO with our 103 kit, but as for performance increases I can say that 25 Outlaws are not speed demons with lots of power due to Baja bottom design, weight and other normal production boat factors. Our expierence and our Baja 25 customers results seem to be about 12-15HP for every mile an hour increase in top end with proper prop and setup work, so this generaly translates to about 7-8 mph for the 100 hp increase. add a good exhaust like Dana or CMI and the addtional 40hp should translate to about 2-3 mph increase for a +10mph increase in speed overall, all things being correct with (HOOKS) removed! Did I say HOOKS!, yes Baja's 25's are famous for them so have him check the bottom.
Good call on hydraulic steering or steering assist, any performance boat going over 70mph with stock bravo steering is a potential safety issue and any real power upgrade in a boat will require carefull prop selection. We've got BBlades and ThrottleUP right here on OSO to help him with that specialty.
As for drives, his boating whether on big ocean water or lake use and his driving habits will more determine if he needs a drive upgrade. we have probably over a hundred 525HP 496's running fine on stock Bravo 1, Bravo 1X and Bravo XZ drives without issues. Good luck to your friend and may he achieve his goal. If I can help, have him call!
Best Regards,
Ray @ Raylar

Buy a low hour Merc 525. Then you'll have something that's worth something when your done. I have no doubt Raylar builds a great upgrade kit, but your still stuck with cast internals, manifolds, etc. I ran the numbers when I upgraded. Hands down the Mercs made better sense. JMO. Would you buy a boat with an engine that has been jacked with?

How do you spell value? You be the judge!
Red Bud:
I understand your thoughts and sentiments exactly, however a lot of boaters with 25-27 foot single engine performance boats like a Baja in this case don't have the resources of your situation with a 37 foot twin engine big expensive boat or possibly your economic disposable income range.
Obviously the racing built Merc HP 525EFI engine is a very durable and reliable 525HP package (as long as the Mercury-CMI headers don't crack and leak) and its a great performer and sells well in the resale market.
However since boat sales have dropped to historic low levels the availability of low hour used HP525's has fallen to almost zero and the good ones are still going in the $20K range without exhaust and about $22K-$25K with headers.
Now lets consider the Raylar kit option on a stock 496.
First the kit with lets say Dana Header exhaust will cost about $9500 and give the engine 560HP which meets or slightly exceeds HP525 levels and the reliability speaks for itself in that Raylar has over 500 Raylar 103 kits and engines out there all over the world, many with mutiple seasons of trouble free use and hours in excess of 400 - 600 hours.
If that's a definition of a boat with a jacked up engine , I firmly disagree!
Sometime over the next two or three years Raylar equipped 496's running 525 to 560 HP will exceed in total number all the HP 525's Mercury racing has built and sold over the last 8 years.
For average small "Joe Boater" performance boater there there are over 25,000 496 engines out there and the Raylar kits offer a pretty good bang for the buck and with lower cost of ownership and in some cases lower insurance cost coverage. Proven Raylar kits offer a great reliable option to the more expensive racing engines.
Just my two cents and obviously I am biased but also a pretty honest appraiser!

My 496HO is one of the newer Emission engines with the Cats-have you done any builds on those yet? Wondering if I can still run those or if I would have to switch to Headers?
Thanks
