242 Islander 6.2ltr re powering questions.
I have 2004, 242 Baja Islander 6.2ltre 320hp,Bravo one 3x19pitch. Re powering 4th time always same thing loss of compression. Anyway I have two questions. 1 does anyone know if this 6.2 engine a known problem child of mercruiser or not?
2 My mechanic is selling me 454MagMPI engine out of another boat. We are having it sent to the machine shop and to be freshened up. I am getting itch for more HP and speed out of the boat. So my mechanic suggested we put a HP500 cam in the block and run a carb, He said the EFI cant be messed with to develop more power etc. I want to know is this a good set up? Has anyone done this before and what might i see for power out of this set up? Also how much power is to much power for my 242? Any advice be great thanks again

If you put a set of 502 heads on it and a roller cam you can pull 385HP. Don't know what the HP500 cam will give you, may be a good cam but will not give you the same HP. Merc made many 385HP horizons motors, just pulled one out last year. one of these days may get around to rebuilding it

I lost two 6.2s to a really strange problem. My raw water fuel cooler fitting had corroded and was letting in minerals, which then the fuel pump shot up to the injectors clogging them and caused the engines to lean out then boom...new engines. If my mechanic wasn't paying attention, I could have easily reinstalled two new engines and blown them from the same problem. I am certain not many mechanics would have found this one.

454 mag mpi makes 385 hp out of the box.
Hp500 cam and carb will make more but you will need an exhaust upgrade too.
Also, you absolutely can make more HP with efi. You can have the computer flashed, injectors and throttle body can be upgraded, intakes can be ported, high flow air filters.

Engines heads have not been pulled so he does not know niether do I. Engine is not being rebuilt because I told mechanic don't waisted my money for a year down just remove it and I want a different engine with more power since this is the 4th go round. Il have the engine on a pallet and on craigslist soon for whatever I can get for it
