We have the 454 mags. Though more would always be better, we always make it home. "Every" friend I have with blue motors have had issues on the water. (So basically maintenance may be a lil $$ more with blue motors)
We cruise at 50-52 which is around 3800 rpms and even with 9 ppl in cockpit, she pops right on plane.. Oddly very flat, not complaining, just thought it would raise the bow more and I don't use tabs except for leveling load and in the rough.
So for a family boat with is 95% of our boating, the hp is fine.. It's depends on what YOU want..

Myself and my friends that have blue engines...the engines never let us down, but the "black drives don't matter" movement have been problem for most of us at some time or two
