Yeah, why wouldn't you get a survey?

Hi Guys!

So the deal on this rare 2004 (#8 of 10) built 232 with the 496 has been revived. So I have a survey being done next week. I'm not sure about you guys but to me it's pretty cool to have 1 of the 10 built 2004 models! To me that has a fair bit of cool factor, what do you guys think about that kind of stuff?

The boat has 78 hours. Should I still go ahead with a compression test and engine scan or is that a waste of money with that little hours? Looking forward to ripping around in this little boat if it all checks out!

Should I run a synthetic oil like Royal Purple? How often should the engine coolant be changed?

Granted the boat is rare, but I'm not sure how much of a 'collectors item' the boat is. I'd lean more toward it is one of the newest, cleanest 232s out there so its like buying a brand new boat with the 232 style and design. That's worth the money in my opinion. I've always liked the 232 over it's replacement the 245, and 232s were only made for so long. When I went for my 232 I wanted a 2000 or newer even though they've been made since at least 1996.

I'd likely do at least the engine scan and have a marine mechanic check out the drive too. I've heard a leak down test is better than checking compression, but am far from a mechanic. I bought mine with a mechanics check and engine scan, then I went down to look at it in person, did not have a full survey completed.

Everyone will have their own opinion on engine oil, I run Mobil 1 with a Mobil 1 filter. Try to scrape up a Mercruiser service manual for reference.

Best of luck, hope you land it!

I agree with him, check the engine and drive out, leak down is the best but compression can tell a decent story as well. Good luck, my son loves his 232 Performance. I also like the layout of the 232 over the later 245.

Rare in boats = The boat sucked and no one bought them, if you ask me. Either didn't perform up to status, price to high, space was small, ect.

Difference between a 2003 and 2004 232 perf?????? = 1 year

I think the 245 cuddy was more usable given the berth was larger vs. the 232 berth + couch layout. But I hate the idea of having to open the engine hatch to get out the anchor. I'd prefer a 245 liner boat over 232 stringer boat as well.

Otherwise pretty much the same boat...

So, the question is: Did you buy it? Inquiring minds want to know.

Might be late to chime in but I have a 1999 232 Performance with Boss package. Equipped with 502 Magnum EFI. I absolutely love the boat. The cuddy has enough room for 2 to crash for the night, or keep the kids out of the sun or warm on evening rides home. Windshield is great, offering protection and still good looks. I run 70mph in mine.
Handling wise, it tends to porpoise a bit between 40 and 50 mph (if I recall correctly the speed) unless you stay well below 1/4 trim. At 66mph it starts to chine walk on its way to 70. Neither of these things are much of a bother, just need to be aware and drive/trim accordingly.

It handles lake chop great. Fit and finish is nice, and the bolsters are awesome.

I came from a stingray 220sx, and its no contest.. The Baja is nicer in every way, and I really liked that 220sx. Compared to friends H2X's, it has more usable cuddy space and access, with similar cockpit space. I prefer the bolster/windshield set up on the 232 versus the sit down and open screen of the H2X, but can see the attraction of the H2X too..its also an awesome boat.

Hope you got your 232!

I'm currently looking at a 2004 Baja 232 with a 496 mag, 67 hours on it. I like the 232 model specifically because I like the idea of the windshield. I just wanted to get some opinions the 232, what you guys think of them, anything to look out for? Pro's and cons of the 2004 vs 2002 or 2003 model year.

Is the 2004 the last year of the cuddy version in the 232? Can you get a Bimini top as an option for some shade? I was thinking of modifying the seat in the cuddy to make the bed a little larger and I'm not sure if snyone has done that?

Thanks very much for your thoughts and input!
Posting for another 277 owner JB, states he runs his up at WOT with no issues
