I intentionally bought one at auction from a national leasing company, they made full disclosure. Got a pristine 2005 Taurus SE with 26K miles for $4800 for my teenage daughter.

3" of water in the floorboards, salvage title. Professionally repaired. Great little starter car.

I was "raised on a car lot" though no longer involved. So I had some inside information at the auction. Knew the auction owner and the leasing company rep. Had to look hard to find signs of water, found a water mark in the insulation after pulling the carpet off the rear inner wheel arch, matched the stated damage exactly.

Not for everyone, I know. Used car prices in Houston are insane. Many cars were getting better than trade-in value at auction. Salvage titled cars can only be bought by dealers, and I was able to get the deal though a buddy that is still one.

give you example of the prices, 1998 jeep Cherokee sport 4dr 2wd ex phone company with decals scraped off the door 160k miles. Should have been a $900-1100 buy. Sold for $2450.

lot's of flood damged cars for tender on www.ridesafely.com
I would always be wary of a water damaged car, they can run fine when you first fix them, but 99% of time water related issues develop with the electrics... Not saying that there isn't some good buys just do your homework throughly!!

Be careful if the flood damage was from Katrina. Some mechanic up north was working on a flood car from katrina and cut himself a while back. The cut was infected by some sort of bad azz bacteria from the filth in the water. The guy died.
