100% pilot error. Any boat will do it if you have enough horsepower and the water gets big enough. I don't know why people think that you can take a boat and hold it WFO in ANY water conditions. That had NOTHING to do with trim or the design of the boat. It does have to do with poor judgement. You cannot take a 28 or 32 foot boat that will run 75 to 85MPH and hold it WFO in growing swells in the ocean.....period. I cannot imagine subjecting my family to that kind of chit. Your family trusts you and expects you to protect them and then you subject them to that....WTF. I am sure I will get flamed for this.....but as the captain of your boat....you are 100% responsible for your passengers at all times.

I agree 100%. He was flying........and those were huge irregular waves. Which is probobly why the other boat slowed down...........Sorry to join the "I saw the video so I can judge bandwagon"........I do think that the way the boat held together was a testament to Sunsation and has given me a new respect for their boats. Lots of other boats have and will come apart. If it didn't those passengers might not of had the same fate. Really glad everyone is OK.

Well said. Everyone is so quick to brag about how fast they can drive their boat in huge waves on this site. But then when you SEE and accident on video we start name calling.

Yes he was hanging it out so I guess you can "blame" the driver. Bottom line it was an accident and if he is the man that people that know him say he is then I am sure he will learn from it.

I think most of us have made mistakes when hanging it out and got LUCKY enough to laugh and joke about it later. He didn't.

I wish all those injured a speedy recovery.

Looks like if he had stayed on the throttles he would have been ok.

It appears that the water impact broke the windshield not the occupants.

It appears that they may have been several incident/accidents.
One, that I was aware during the safety meeting (Friday) that a boat was going out to sea. Due to large incoming waves at the inlet, (after the bridge going out,) the boat went vertical and riders out. During our safety meeting we were warned about the exit condition at the inlet.
Be safe everyone.

East pass is, for the most part, always ROUGH! You get the tide going out and the prevailing winds blowing in and that inlet gets very nasty. We took pictures & video last year in a buddy's Tiger TS and we cleared the water several times. However, he wasn't running it ballz out (probably 50 - 55 mph) and he had the boat trimmed where it was flying level. I'm not laying blame or pointing fingers in this incident. You can force any boat to fly uncontrollably in that water if you get silly with speed and trim. Bottom line is, it is up to the captain to get his vessel and passengers back safely. All things need to be considered when boating in water like that - water conditions, speed, angle of attack etc. Hope all involved are doing well.

A bigger question is why is it made out to be the boats fault? The title of this thread ( What happeneed or caused the Sunsation to have an issue Friday in Destin?) makes it appear the boat got a mind of its own and did something strange. Since the majority seem to agree that it is driver error maybe it is time to change the title.

I don't think the title was meant to be misleading or an indictment of Sunsation. It does state "What happened or caused the Sunsation to have an issue Friday in Destin". You could very easily answer that question by saying the captain caused the Sunsation to have an issue or the rough conditions are what happened. I suppose he could have changed out the word Sunsation for "boat" but then the first thing everyone would have asked was "what boat?" This was a bad situation that could have turned tragic. Let's leave well enough alone and say the captain used poor judgement. As I said above, you can force ANY boat into some bad behavior if you really want to and more than likely everyone on this board has done it at some point.
