Default Offshore mounts

I just finished cutting a deal for an HP500EFI. I want to use the offshore mounts that comes with this motor. Problem is my 454 uses standard mounts. I have seen that most boats with this motor simply have a piece of aluminum angle bolted to the stringers to attach to the mount on the motor. On my 259, you only have access to the inside of the stringers, making through bolting almost impossible. The other side is covered by molded in fiberglass/wood. Is it o.k. to only mount the aluminum angles with lag bolts? To me this lag bolt thing does seem to be any better that the lag bolts I have on top of the stringers right now. Or am I wrong??

I had planned on installing an offshore mount in my Check also. Until I came up with a good design to make my stock mounts stronger. I would not lag bolt the L- angle to the side of the stringer. As you said, it won't be any stronger than what you have. Only way is to cut a hole in the flooring on the outside of the stringers. Like a 6" dia. hole that can be covered with a deck plate after you finish. After cutting the hole you'll have to dig out the foam so you can get to the stringer.

Congrats on getting the new motor! The one from Jo?

talk soon, Eric

Eric,

Yes, I got the motor from Jo. He will be shipping it tomorrow. I called Checkmate regarding the mounts. They told me that I would also have to notch the stringers to get the offshore mounts to fit. Sounds like a mess. I don't want to disturb the stringers that much, and I don't want to be cutting access holes as you mentioned. BUT, it seems that is the only real way to do it. I am not that afraid of the standard mounts ripping out, I just thought that it would be nice to use the offshore mounts. Maybe I will keep it for a winter project.

If it makes you feel better(it did me) I have a freind down here that had a 251 Check with 1200hp blower motor. It ran 103mph on radar. He had the same stock mounts that you and I have and never had any isssues with them.
