Unhappy Need Advice - Outdrive Housing failed

Well, after having a wonderful season with the Stinger this year, I pulled it out of the water, and asked the marina to do the winterization. I then received a call from the marina that during trimming the engines up, the outdrive housing broke. The marina has indicated that the housing can be replaced (with the old outdrive put into it) or replace the entire housing & outdrive - they estimated about $4000.00 for this . So, thought I'd post here to get some advice. Would it really cost that much to replace, and should I try and get the marina to pay for part of it?

..wow! looking at the piks, the metal is all clean around the break, while the outdrive itself is dirty, this is telling me that A. the boat lived in the water and B. thats a fresh break. meaning that it hasn't been cracked and weakening. if it was there would be water intrusion in the crack and the edges would be dull and dirty..this leads me to believe that they broke it, it was not 'waiting' to come apart. does anypart of the drive look like it was whacked against something??

these are his piks..

That's a good analysis - I have yet to see the boat in person but some of the other pictures show some fiberglass on the ground the color of the boat. I suspect what happened is that they trimmed the engines up into the swim platform.

And yes, the boat is in the water all season.

thanks for your help.

I would look at it and get your own piks asap! the longer they have it.... bottom line is that it wasn't broke when they took it, now it is AND he wants to make money off you fixing it. you need to find out how it broke and why...it looks like it took considerable force to break, look for bent stuff, gouges in the pavement etc between the hoist and the boat.

The outdrive would never just "break while trimming" in that area. It was definitely done at the marina.

After posting my above comment and looking at both pictures, if one drive were to be trimmed to the up or trailer position while the second drive remained lowered, the rod end would run out of its capacity to swivel thus putting the mount in a bind, twisting and breaking the housing. Usually the rod end will bend, but who knows. Just a possible scenario, among others.

Another question - I have two options - either weld it or replace it. Replacing it seems problematic in that the mechanic could not find a similar replacement housing. Where would one find housings like this?

Was the boat lifted with a forklift?? If so - That's where I would place the blame....
