I thought all side by side were tigers, and staggered ones were X models.

Straight Tigers were the original 42's after the Revolutions. Cig stepped the bottom and still called them Tigers. When they put big power and 6's on the newly stepped Tigers the CG was not right and "some" of them didn't run very well so Cigarette changed the steps around to cure the CG problem and the 42X was born.

For a couple years Cig sold the Tiger with the original step bottom that could be ordered with XR's and smaller power and the 42X was reserved for bigger power. Then they went away with the original step design and only built the 42X because it works basically with any set up.

FYI, not technically a 42X.
thanks for the info on the differences between the two but what do you mean the 188th street version is not technically a 42X?

It was built before they named them 42x's. Right at the time they were changing factories. There's a handful of 42's that arent dubbed tigers or 42X's that were built in the 03/04 era before cigarette officially changed the name of the 42 from the Tiger to the 42X. Some people call them 42x's but you won't see "42X" anywhere on the boat like the ones built later. A few of the 42's built around this time had the old bottom as well.
