Oh well... TheSe boats are time bombs! Season over .... Time to freshen up!!!! Could have been worse! Thank godbibhave land rot too to keep me busy...

Throwing a rod would make me think there was a fastner issue or a cylinder was detonating and pounding the rod bearing. For most of us average marine guys were aren't revving the engine to the point of stressing the rod so much it breaks. I'd imagine you had some h beams in there ?
Seems like those engines had issues from the day they were built back when the previous owner had them. You prob best to start from scratch now. Throw some cam in those things !
