Gas Tanks?

I have been told that you must fill both tanks with the same amount of fuel if you don't want one side to run out before the other. Now that I have removed the access panel, I see that both fuel lines go to both engines. My question is; Are the two lines coming out of each tank set at different levels or are the pick ups at different locations? Just trying to figure out why you could'nt run the other engine on the opposite fuel tank.

Thanks,

Bob
