Marco, any knowledge on the Paketa hull? I believe it was a tri-maran. Designer?? Any success? Certainly different!

Re: What happened to all the TIN boats??

I've been watching the UIM races on SpeedTV. It looks like there are a couple of CUVs still running there (Thurya and a black and yellow boat). Very good looking boats with a classic line!

And that Anzio race was pretty exciting!

Very underestimated too, in my personal opinion. Let's not forget that the 37' Enfield Marine was competitive for quite a while, be it in the Miss Enfield II, Unowot or Uno-Embassy version. Well driven, it was one of the few hulls (with Sammy James' 38 Bertrams) that could take on the all dominant 36' Cigarette at the time.

Phil I totally agree. It was a fast machine and a fantastic design. I absolutely love it. One of the safest hulls around at the time as well I would imagine with the wrap around screen protecting the crew. And it looked just right, if you know what I mean.

Nigel: I used to hate that boat, that was the start of the end of Cigarette dominence in Europe. Could you imagine if everyone switched to those boats, I used to envy those guys behind that windshield, it always looked like they were out for Sunday cruise. Don Shead also has to be one of the best drivers that ever was, he throttled and drove himself, and was always a contender for the win. If I would have been asked to switch to an enfield I would have had to think really hard, I saw a lot of his transom, but inevitably I think the driver throttleman won out in the long run. How about some pictures of A.B.O 40`Enfield glass boat The guys name is on the tip of my tongue, I can see him standing next to his yellow and red boat wearing bright green trousers with Yellow shirt. Very colorful Brit. A.B.O. ( another bloody omelet ) remember. Have fun with the research, I`ll be looking forward to your findings and input, also you should post about Tommy Sopwith, Tim Powell etc. and the boats they raced in my era. Have fun!!!!!!!!! 7XCHAMP

Nigel: I just looked at these pix again and noticed that at some point they changed crew positions from two in back to two in front, I wonder when this was done, seems I always remember only Shead in front running the boat with the Colonel and Harry H. in the back ??????????????? any ideas.

Richie,

Well spotted. The single forward set up was typical of Tommy Sopwith's boats and can be observed from Miss Enfield to Miss Embassy.
My guess is that when Shead, Hoare and Hyams started racing Unowot they inherited this set up but changed to the 2+1 later in the season, maybe for increased practicability.

Concerning A.B.O, it was driven by Bobby Buchanan-Michaelson. In 1973 he had campaigned Hot Omelette, a 34' Avenger with Tim Powell at the throttles. In 1974, both he and Powell had their own 40' Planatec. ABO and Uno Embassy both shown here on pictures from Graham Stevens' library.
