Re: Who Would Sell This....the Legend
The Miami-Nassau race had a perpetual trophy. I won in 1967, and got to keep it for a year. There is a small "keeper". That ain't it. I think Don had that made for the trophy shelf. There weren't many trophies on it in those days................

Re: Who Would Sell This....the Legend
I am the seller of the trophy on ebay. I am also Don's youngest son. I was contacted by one the bidders through ebay with questions regarding the authenticity. I initially did not want to post on this forum or any other because I felt it would be "promoting" the auction in an inappropriate way.
The trophy for auction is authentic. It is one of many items that was given to me by my mother Lillian Aronow. I recently moved into a very small apartment in Brooklyn and don't have the space for every single memorabilia item.
As for whether my dad had this made for himself, I would have no idea.
This trophy belonged to my father, and I have had it all these years assuming this was the actual trophy he won for that race.
If it can be proved that he had just made this for himself, I will revise the ebay auction to state so ASAP.
I am including a photo link, at least proving I am actually Don's son.

Please, if any bidders have any further questions, contact me through ebay.
And I apologize to the forum admins for having this topic come up on your great forum.

Wylie, nice to hear from you. I don't think the trophy is devalued in any way. Don's first big win. Christ, I would think you could get really big bucks for it. Whatever it is, it is the only one.
Best regards to you and yours.

Nice post, very polite and seemingly honest. We'll assume you are who you say and the trophy is what you say,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
My question is why in the world would you sell this??!! Your father has to be the most famous person in offshore history. This trophy is a piece of him, it's a piece of your lineage, it's a piece of your family.
To say you don't have space is, well,,,, frankly kind of silly. Throw out one coffee cup from the cupboard and put the trophy there.
Send it to me, I'll hold it and appreciate and polish it and display it until you have more room.

Re: Who Would Sell This....the Legend
First, let me say I am very proud of all my father's boating achievements. I enjoy reading about them and occasionally meeting someone who knew my father during his boating days.
Yes, I could very well make room by throwing out a "coffee cup” and placing the trophy in its place.
But to say this trophy and others are a piece of him and a piece of my lineage, well I disagree.
I adore my father for being just that, my father.
While, I am selling a trophy and other memorabilia items, I am not selling ALL of his trophies or ANY of his personal effects. Things from his life that actually mean something to me, I would never sell.
I don’t need this trophy to be reminded of my father and his achievements in the offshore world. I have plenty of items, in fact maybe too many items from that part of his life.
(I am currently writing this as I wear one of his personal racing jackets)
These items and trophies do not represent my father’s legacy to me. His legacy is in the wonderful boats he made, and while I am sure to get more criticism over this fact, everything else has just become clutter.
I have my own life and my own personal achievements. I do not need every single "piece of him".
I am one his sons, so in a way; I carry the biggest piece of him.
I hope this answers your question and dissuades some of you of from thinking I am an ungrateful son of a brilliant man.

Wylie, very respectful response. One that could be spoken only by a son.
As you stated in your current e-bay listing, can you give us some details on what other items you will be auctioning?

Re: Who Would Sell This....the Legend
After discussing the eBay issue with Michael and other members of my family. I have decided to take off the eBay auctions.
I sincerely apologize to the eBay members who have started to bid on the items and to anyone who was eagerly watching them.
My decision to put some of these items up for auction in the first place was a poor decision, though well intentioned.
A previous post could, best say the reason why I am taking these auctions off, "keep it in the family".
Again, I am very sorry to anyone who was bidding on the items and to the members of this forum for wasting your time with such a commotion.
All of your admiration for my father's legacy is deeply moving and I wish all you a happy holiday.

Re: Who Would Sell This....the Legend
Wylie,
Welcome to "Offshore Only". We hope you come here more often and pipe in on some of these threads.
FWIW, I owned and started to restore your dad's original "Maltese Magnum", reluctantly I sold it to someone who is in a better position $$ to restore it.
