His passionate attention to detail ensured that nothing about his boats was ever ordinary or extra-neous to their purpose, which was to go faster than anything else on the water. "To me, speed is the product of beauty," Aronow said in 1983.

The paint jobs have sure changed.

Not a bad article until the second to last sentence...
"Racing a Cigarette is a hell of a lot easier than sailing, I decided."

Yeah the paint jobs have sure changed and IMO not to the better....
Todays boats look like they´ve got either a batch of paint cans fallen over them or a pages of comic books have been thrown on them with the force of a hurricane.

Well yes and no....
Depends on what level you´re racing.
Operating a powerboat is easier than sailing thou.
*I´ve competed in sailing since 1977 but prefer a powerboat with the family I never ever take my family with me in a sailboat just the crew I compete with....get my drift ?

But sailboaters don't get killed too often.

around the world sailing races claim racers every year...
races are longer in seas that are far greater then any storm course powerboat race in history. may want to read more then oso to get all the unbiased info...

No they die competing way out offshore and every year a handful, but not all of them either fund their passion the proper way.
Remember the last Volvo Ocean Race..it hit the tabloids many times because Volvo is sponsoring a "death-race".
