My Top Banana had McBett's engines (I wasn't on the preferred list from Mercruiser!!!!) and the fastest I ever saw that boat run was 96.
BUT....that was in the day of non GPS speedometers...I had a Nordskog with a pitot tube hanging down. The boat was very light on fuel, at the end of a race, and the conditions were ideal for that length boat, that day.

Hello Charlie,
The Late Jeff Galenti and I raced the old Velocity when we brought it Steve in the early 80s., the entire transom had a 3/4 or 1 inch alum plate across it as it was cut so many times when Steve and Gene had it. They tried different drive combos trying to go over a 100.
It was called Air Brook when we raced it in the North East.
Thank you
Jim

I think with the right props....remember, they have advanced a lot in the 30 years of technology....that we should be in the mid to maybe higher 90's.
On a good day with the sun in the right place....we just turn off the GPS and tell ourselves we are doing 150...yeahh...it feels great!!!
We are shooting for the HORBA April get together in So Florida the last Sat, the 28th.....9AM to Noon...boats launched and tied up at a restaurant and after lunch....we take a spin out of sight of land for 30 miles or so.... toward Bimini and then come back..... following one of the old race course settings...Sam Griffith or Bacardi or whatever....just jumping and flying and pretending we never got old.

Yes, we will add whatever we can to keep it running as smooth as possible, while still retaining the old school look.
We want to keep running with the pack, not hobbling in on one engine.

No the X dimension on the resto will be exactly where it always was.....the new prop technology will be able to work around that.
It is more important to keep it as original as possible than gain 2 MPH.

Re: HP and Top Speeds of old Race boats
I recall that in the 1976 Cowes Torquay race programme it quoted American Eagle as having been timed at over 93mph, presumably with twin 625 KAMīs??

Re: HP and Top Speeds of old Race boats
I was paging through Searace- the book and quoted speeds for deep v's w/ 650 HP was around mid 80-s. This was in the 1975 section of the book. Seems about right, straight deep v- 24 degrees w/ Speed masters.
I think Gentry and his American Eagle (s) held the speed record at various times in late 70's and of course in early 80's. He had a 43 Scarab w/ triple turbo motors did 120 sumthin.
