Reprising the story, still in 1981 another new Cougar in wood was builded for Paul Clauser,a 41'.
That boat was sold to Al Copeland the follow year for him came back to competitions after the Halpern's tragedy.
Here in two paintings versions.

In 1984 Warren Cervini bought the abandoned cat (Copeland was competing in Superboat with a tin Cougar cat 50') renaming Stiletto and repainted it to be looking like a carrot.

Last Cougar(OP1) in wood but better of every others; the original Eddie Trotta's Rampage was bought by Tony Garcia in 1983 because him new superboat wasn't ready to compete in Open 1 winning the World Championships in Key West 1983 as Arneson Special.
The surger doc Larry Spergel bought it in 1984 changin only the cockpit and winning the APBA Open 1 World Title.

To complete the Cougar cats on wood saga here the only Superboat: the unsuccesful 4 engines 48' of Tony Garcia in Key West APBA World Championships in 1984 then became Gentry's big toy in 1987.
About 12 OP1 cats on wood was builded by Cougar in 36',38' and 41' winnings three UIM World Title(Kaama 1979,Fayva Shoes 1980 and Arneson Special in 1983),two APBA World Cup(Michelob Light 1982 and Surgin 1984).
There was a 35' Popeye's Diet Coke powered with six two stroke(from outboards)Mercury onboard in 1986-1990 but I haven't pictures of it. Anyone have it?

The first one would be the 1986 version. The second one in1990 with large changes on deck .
I would like to see the engines bay...

Correction: Tony Garcia never purchased anything.
Howard Arneson Bough/Paid for and Maintained the boats. Garcia was a fraud.

Perhaps Kona Kai, which was a chain of restaurants. There was one of them located in Ft Lauderdale Florida on 17th street, in front of what was Everglades Marina.

Rik you are right.
Howard Arneson was the mecenate (almost like another most famous Howard, The Aviator).
Like a mecenate was Bernie Little that took away Garcia from the cockpit of 38' Michelob Light putting on Tom Gentry in 1982.
I don't know why you apostrophize Garcia a "fraud", but he and James was a fast couple in those years.
And thats it's sure.
