DONZI 008 - Donzi28 vs Cary28 - I'm confused?!

Hi there,

Some posts of the last few months mention the donation of the molds of the Donzi28 to Cary with due payments of insurance etc...

What I don't get is that the Donzi28 measures 10'6" and the Cary28 9'10" - I can see the resemblence with the Donzi28 in profile view - cut down to 80% as mentioned by Allan Brown (btw thanks for all these interesting threads!!) but what happened to the beam??

Was the 008 just a trimmed down version of the Donzi28 Sportsman/cruiser or did they rather cut an existing 28' hull longitudinal and horizontal to make new molds, the molds that finally ended up at Cary and later on at BlackFin / Cabo Rico??

Thanks guys! This mystery haunts me for years...

Michael

1980 Donzi Criterion 22
I have a 28 Cary, it is 9'10" from rubrail to rubrail, I don't remember if this mold went to Performer or the Donzi hull did, but the resemblance is pretty similar

Yeah, I know, one of your pics is on my desktop!! Really wonderfull boat and the sexiest hull lines ever!

I think Allan once mentioned that the Performers were splashed hulls of the Donzi28 but the Performer 28 or combi are measuring 10'6"...

4 BOATS KILLED :)
The 008 and the Cary 28' are vertically challenged 28' Donzis. The Performer is a full height 28' hull. Don cut down the 28' to make a better looking profile.

Thanks Mr Brown!
I always had the impression on the pics that 008 looked less wide on the beam than 007 - mystery resolved.

So there was quite some cutting and bonding those days to be able to improve hulls or to make new model - very labour efficient in fact!

We have become a bit ridiculous these days - haven't we - designing hulls in 3D software and milling in full scale up to 0.1mm accuracy at x-thousand dollar costs making our boats way to expensive in the end...not to mention the looks.

Greets.
