Staggered or side by side engine placement

Whats the benefit of either? which is better? I guess staggered was done because of a narrow beam?

staggared: better cog w/ engines lower in boat and closer to the centerline, plus gets a bit more weight forward. Also drives are closer and lower, better for staying hooked up.

side by side: more cockpit room.
