I always thought the first offshore race I ever attended was St Clair a few years ago when I first started racing. Well my Dad told me that when I was 10 or 11 I went to a Race with him and his Co-worker Dick (maybe it was Red) after the race my Dad and Dick (or maybe Red) were going to Buy a boat (38 Scarab) and race it with a sponsor from Stroh’s beer.
There is allot to the story that my Dad told me and your Right Gary was a "roller", but this story is more about my old man wanting to race, but circumstance never allowed it and me picking up were he never started.

He had a thing about eating raw meat the night before a race YUCK
But h20boater (Mark with a K) can tell you al ot more than I can about Gary as he had known him for a long time
Gary passed away a few years ago, he was definitely as passionate about racing as anyone I have known
Like Mark said, Red Crain is living outside of Detroit and doing. We see him every once in a while.
Red has a some of the wildest stories to tell as well
What a cool bunch of history between a few old time racers that live in eastern Michigan (yea that means you Mark with a K)

Can't swing a dead cat without hitting an Offshore legend here in Deetroit! While Pete may be god on that side of the mitten, we have the apostle over here.....50 kills & still lurking about.

Rick, That is a nice story, if your dad worked at Ford it was Dick.
Nowadays the "Apostle of Speed" can be seen flying his boat OVER Lake St Clair, and also one of the nicest guy's you'll ever meet.
Dave, do you remember his old Chris Craft XK-22?

...and when Earthbound, Red has traded the latest Skater for one of them beaked fishin' botes with a couple black blenders on the back!
I'm old skool, but not quite vintage enough to remember his C-C...imagine h2oboater has picts of it in his museum??
Attaching a shot of Red's 24....him & Kevin doing their best to corkscrew the thing. (Finally succeeded in Lake Erie if I recall correctly!)

This is all bringing back some great memories. Back in the late 90's Neil was racing alot, with anyone that would ask. And alot of people were asking. Cat;s "V"s it didn't matter he could run it. We had a joke between us and the other racers as to who was the official Offshore Whore. He took the prize by racing in 5-6 differant boats in a season to my 4. Those were the days.
The Gary Steuwe stories are great also. The prime rib roast on the way to the Oshkosh race, raw tenderloin during the drivers meetings, I drove for Gary and Ginny for a season and we had a blast. Just another character in the sea of offshore racing.
