Bottom right corner shot was taken during the Powerboat Magazine Kilo runs held off the coast of Marina Del Ray, California in 1975. Those were the days of the real offshore kilo runs, held in the open ocean. Dad encountered some yacht wakes mid-course, stood it straight up three times in a row and finally flew, tripped and stuffed. T-Man, Myles "Smiley" Johns, who later died in a crash with Howard Quam's Flap Jack's, broke his foot in the incident. Yet, he toughed it out, raced on Sunday and won, clinching the national championship.
