tms,
You're partially right. The last Hennessy race went up to Fire Island. When Benihana took over they wanted the boats closer to the shore, the race went from Asbury Park to Barnegat Inlet. The farthest "Offshore leg" was one 5 mile leg off Barnegat Inlet. In 1977, the Open class boats ran 177.8 miles , and the Production class ran 84 miles. I guess we can blame Rocky for bringing offshore boats close to shore.

I think he did that so his cat would be more competitive. LOL I"m guessing you were around back then so you remember the original cats were not very good in rough water.
Even going 5 miles off barnegat the water gets real nasty and things break. Some days the inlet will kill you if your not carefull! LOL

Ciao Sonny,
I believe that you have to tell a lot of things but not in this thread where we are off-topic.
I would want to create a new thread about your MSVs and if I have time I will do it in this weekend.

Sea Wraith was my 27 Magnum purple Sport ,and
that was me when we raced in 1976. Was a stock Volvo boat at the time, no tabs and no adjustable trim.
The production course was longer and was shorten two days before the race, because some of the racers didn't want to race that long and didn't have enough fuel.

I can check in some of the old programs, but some of the later races in the early 80s went offshore towards the NY.
they used the Long Branch Fishing pier as a check point location, and then ran down along the coast line.

Thank you
Jim
