You are correct and then on a south west angle to the Long Branch fishing pier, then south along the coast towards Point.
Many of the racers got to the BA buoy and headed west to the coast and then south pass the LB fishing pier a lot longer.
Some missed the BA buoy and hit Fire Island or the South Shore of Long island.

You had to do some home work to stay on course in those days, and with out GPS units.
