We lost another ironman from the glory days
Sorry to report that Peter Rothschild past away on July 8th at the young age of 74. For those of you who don't know his name Peter, Larry Smith and Chuck Daigh won the 1966 Long Beach to San Francisco endurance race in a 23 foot Formula named Thunderballs, Peter won many other races in different boats all named Thunderballs. He was a great man and will be missed I was lucky to have gotten to know him over the past 20 years and hear some of the great stories. There will be a memorial held at the Balboa Bay Club Newport Beach CA in the fall.

Peter Bennett Rothschild 1940-2015 R.I.P.
As a late follow-up to Dan's beautiful commentary on the passing of the much-revered Gentleman Pete Rothschild, of Beverly Hills and Lido Isle, Newport Beach, California, I meant to upload this footage from the 1966 race to San Francisco, from Long Beach, that the late legend Bob Nordskog's grandson Erik was kind enough to share with us all. Erik's YouTube channel has several family films that are true gems from racing days gone by. At about 15 minutes 20 seconds into this video the early morning preparations for the Hennessy Race starts and Bob is seen getting his Bertram ready and Pete Rothschild pulls the cover off his 233 Formula Thunderbird 21 'Thunderballs' with a big smile towards the camera. To this day I believe that he at that moment knew that with the Chuck 'Scarab Formula One automobile racer' Daigh dialed-in, bulletproofed Formula, and his amazing crew member and best buddy Larry 'future Team Scarab' Smith onboard, This was going to be The Team to try to beat in that race. Once the Long Beach to San Francisco Race got going, late in the 1966 season, The King of Thunderboat Row and His fellow competitors from Florida, and from all the way along up the East Coast, were about to find out that when the going got tougher than tough offshore, 'The Left Coast' racers were very worthy contenders for the trophies. That footage starts at 35:40. 🏆

The Sports Illustrated article, about this epic race, that introduced many traditional sports fans to a mostly unknown gladiator sport conducted offshore on the World's Seven Seas.

The winners' portrait of Pete's Team, with The Hennessy Cup, from the 1966 Catalina Island Challenge Trophy; Chuck Daigh left, and far-right Pete with Larry Smith next to him. Also below a touching film created by Pete's beloved wife Janie, over a period of a year editing many years of family film footage and photographs, for his 50th birthday in 1990. Pete's daughter Alixzandra shared it and i.m.h.o. it exemplifies a life well lived, especially as an example of the best Southern California has to offer. As You will see, Pete and All his loved ones got around, both family and friends. Hat's off! Grateful to be the caretaker of Pete's last Team Scarab, which was ready just in time for delivery for His 50th. 🙏
