454 Merc Crank, Resurface or Not to Resurface

Ok, I finaly got my 454 Merc all torn down. Found some slight damage in a couple of the rod bearings, and one of the mains. The crank is definitly going to need resurfacing, but some people say you ahouldn't do it with a boat engine and others say you can. Anybody have any input on this subject?

Of course you can have them reground.Take it to a reputable engine machine shop and they will regrind as needed and supply the new bearings.I even looked in the Merc Manual and they said Quote if out of spec have reground to the next under size. They usually go by .010",.020",.030" under size.

GET ER DONE !!

I don't think they even make bearings over .030" under. You may be able to special order them somewhere but I don't recall ever seeing them.

hey do, they also make .040 and .050 I took one of mine to .040 in the past, had issues wiping mains, I think that had part to do with it...I have 2 new cranks now, all rebalanced with coated bearings... all is well!
