Bucks can fly when your building a motor so i like the input on other cost involved..good reminder!
IF you where me would you get a Gm BB used and do a lil stroke and bore/heads/intake/cam/exh/Etc. or is it smarter to buy a Dart block.
Ahh trs.

building from scratch is always great

- but You can find good BBC short locks everywhere drop your money on the heads and exhaust system.

The good old heavy ass trs!!!
Thats why i need some power to push this pig.
Fresh is a nice way to start, bbc block can be had or short dough and they're everywhere so i hear ya on that.
I guess a full parts list will have to be put together to find out the true cost of what i'm trying to do.
Any more input dudes!

Wink

I will say it again softly- "There is no replacement for displacement" !
High horsepower small blocks = moderate torque and high rpms for big dollars.

Moderate power 500HP Big Blocks = big torque and lower rpms = longer life and moderate dollars.

Pretty easy and a moderate cost to find a low dollar complete marine 454, stroke it to 496 and get the power and torque your 22 footer will perform nicely with.

When it comes time to sell the boat a moderate big block will sell easier and for more.

JMO.

Ray @ Raylar

if you go alum heads-intake, you are approaching stock small block weight.

So i think we all agree on Big Block!!! and a nice pair of alum-heads and intake combo is a wise choice for some extra weight savings/lower temps/and just overall flow better to make that BB make power/tq
I'm going to do some research on BB short blocks vs. buying a used mercuiser BB and doing a re-buildup.
496 is a nice number 555 sounds better lol.
let me see what i can come up with. are there any deals on what i'm looking for?
Agian thanks for the info/feedback the more the better.
Happy Easter!

Dart Little m block
10.5 compression
Forged internals
Brodix track 1's with a little work
Super Victor intake with some work
.630 @ 250* Bob Madera solid roller cam, Jesel shaft rockers
HP950 carb, MSD distributor and 6AL
Stainless Marine manifolds with full dry exhaust
Alpha drive with a 27p Hydromotive prop
594hp 6300rpm 540tq 5400rpm on 93 octane
Runs great and is manageable anywhere. Boat runs 92-93 mph if you got the nerve. I rarely see above 80mph. Plenty for me...
A bbc in a 22' would be more mild and probably cheaper. But the sbc is pretty cool when you tell someone its a small block..

Oh.. it's in a 1986 22' Velocity

406"
I bought the boat off another guy 3 yrs ago. The motor was originally built for another boat. He bought the motor and refined the oil cooler system. Then I bought it. I pulled the motor last year just to check it out and everything looked great. The drive has almost 1000hrs on it. the last 150-200 was with this motor. I put a newer lower on the drive cause it was having engaging into reverse problems. Haven't had any problems(knock on wood).
