Tell you a quick story.
Built a motor over a weekend a few years back so i could get to a big raft up on Sunday. To many distractions, to many beers and in to much of a hurry I left a head bolt only finger tight. First start noticed water in the oil. Not much but the oil was a different color and looked like about a half qt extra on the dipstick. Pulled the exhaust, nothing. Went for the intake next being famous (for me) for water intrusion on new motors and when pulling the valve cover I discovered the bolt. Did the motor clean out (diesel fuel in a can) and 2 oil changes with filters and then thought there was not a chance I was going to the raft up after this so I then pulled the motor back out and took it apart. Wait a waste of time doing the clean out. If I would have run it with what looked like lithium grease in all the journals the motor would have been dead in less then a 100 yards from the ramp.
If you do, do it be very careful how you run it and then change the oil again.

Well, I changed the oil 4 times, got it clear, took a low rpm ride, & it was good. Then I took a short toot around 3500 rpm & the milkshake came back.
Found a crack in the valley. I musta halfazzed the winterization, fool.
Worse thing, I supposedly did the right thing winterizing. Pulled the petcocks and ran a coathanger in there.
Plus I don't run in muddy water so I don't know how it happened unless when I probed the drains something maybe blocked em before all the water was out.
I tell ya from now on I'm going to keep rattling that probe around til nothing comes out, then I'll send some RV anti freeze down the tract.

Let me guess , starboard side of the valley about 3/4 the way up . I had an 1988 that did the same thing . If you weigh that block compared to the older two piece main block it will be considerably lighter . In the zest to make everything lighter i think they went a little too far for a few years and thus these blocks are prone to cracking in that location .

I was going to say, I aways winterize mine dry. Old guy from Alaska told me a long time ago that "air don't freeze" just after I found out I broke a block using antifreeze that didn't get up to the heads.
Sorry to see it bro. Get the rest apart asap so your cam and suck don't get rusty. Spray everything down WD-40

No it didn't crack all the way up to the top of the block, but it did run across the water jacket along the inside of the vee right under the #3 pushrods. The crack was 5" long. I thought about replacing my block,, or lock n stitching, and then I went with marine tex. It's all together now and has runs to full heat a few times. But it has not been run under a load yet, that's tomorrow.
I have not ever used anti freeze for winterizing, so I am pissed.
I have always gone dry, but I somehow screwed up this time. That's what made me think out loud about RV. I have been under the belief that it slushes up but does not expand. And I have a camper that I have used it in for 7 years. Guess I will do some research.
I suppose I could open everything up, probe and then blow out the petcock holes and then go for a long trailer ride to shake out whatever is still in there.
We shouldn't even be having this discussion. I should not have had water in my motor. It goes below zero every winter around here.

I scrapped my block in favor of a true 4 bolt main SBC. One of the sought after 010 high nickel content made in mexico castings. Worked like a charm.
NHGuy, I hope all works well for ya. Yey for living in Texas. Drain the water and call it a day.
